Carbon markets careers, answered

The questions people ask most about breaking into and building a career in carbon markets, CBAM and decarbonization.

How do I get a job in carbon markets?

Pick one of the eight job families (project development, MRV & verification, carbon accounting, origination & trading, policy, software & data, finance, or commercial), learn the one standard that role lives inside, and pivot in from an adjacent field — finance, software, consulting or science all transfer. The fastest hires are pivots, not fresh graduates. Our careers guide maps each route.

What qualifications do I need to work in carbon markets?

There is no single required certification. What matters is fluency in the framework your target role uses — the GHG Protocol for carbon accounting, Verra/VCS or Gold Standard for the voluntary market, ISO 14064 for verification, or the EU ETS/CBAM rules for compliance roles. Demonstrated understanding of one standard, and one real limitation of it, beats a paid certificate at interview.

What jobs is CBAM creating?

The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is generating CBAM reporting/compliance analysts, embedded-emissions specialists, trade-compliance-and-carbon crossover roles, CBAM consultants, and software/product roles — on both the EU importer side and the exporter side (India, Turkey, China). It is currently the sharpest single demand spike in carbon markets. See the CBAM hiring primer.

What is the difference between the compliance and voluntary carbon markets?

Compliance markets are mandatory — the EU and UK ETS, CBAM, California cap-and-trade and similar schemes, where regulation forces companies to measure and pay for emissions. The voluntary carbon market is where companies buy credits beyond any legal requirement, spanning nature-based projects, engineered removals, registries and ratings. Carbon Desk lets you filter roles by market.

Is a career in carbon markets a good move?

Carbon markets are one of the few parts of the economy still hiring aggressively into a technical, mission-adjacent skill set — growing, fragmenting into specialisms, and still young enough that a sharp outsider can break in without a decade of carbon experience. Corporate decarbonization and compliance budgets have proven resilient to cost-cutting.

What does an MRV analyst do?

MRV — measurement, reporting and verification — is the evidence layer that makes a carbon credit mean anything. MRV specialists design monitoring plans, run remote-sensing and field measurement, and assemble the reports; on the verification side, auditors independently check a project's claims before credits are issued. Remote sensing, GIS, statistics and audit/assurance backgrounds transfer well.

Are carbon-market jobs remote?

Many are. Carbon accounting, software and data, MRV analysis, policy and commercial roles are increasingly offered fully remote or remote-friendly, while project-development and field roles are location-based. Carbon Desk tags remote and remote-friendly roles so you can filter for them.

Which carbon-market roles are most in demand right now?

Four niches are pulling ahead heading into 2026: compliance and border-carbon roles (CBAM), Scope 3 and value-chain carbon accounting, high-integrity MRV (especially digital and remote-sensing), and engineered removals. The largest raw volume still sits in corporate carbon accounting, software, and consulting.
